Justin and Kaylin were absolutely amazing today. They came wayyyy faster than expected. Very nice and worked very hard to help me get the best option for my air and heat unit. Would definitely recommend NextGen to another!
Heat pumps behave differently from other heating systems, and some of what looks wrong is normal. Describe what yours is doing and the evaluation can start by telling the two apart.
01NextGen · Heat Pump RepairFour behaviours that get reported as faults and frequently are not. Knowing them saves a call, and makes the calls you do place more useful.
A defrost cycle melts accumulated frost, and the result can look like the unit is steaming. On a cold damp day this is the system doing its job.
Heat pumps deliver heat at a lower temperature than combustion equipment. Warm-not-hot is the normal sensation, provided the house still reaches temperature.
Running for extended periods is how a heat pump is meant to work, especially when it is cold out. Short, frequent cycling is the more unusual pattern.
Falling back on auxiliary heat in genuinely cold weather is designed behaviour. Doing it constantly, or in mild weather, is not.
A few of these are normal in the right conditions, which is exactly why they are worth describing rather than self-diagnosing. What matters is whether the behaviour is new, persistent, or getting worse.
The outdoor heat-pump equipment does not burn fuel, but some homes use a gas furnace as backup. If you smell gas or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services. If you see sparking, smell burning, or the breaker trips repeatedly, stop using the system and leave it switched off until it has been looked at.
The equipment changes what is worth reading, though the service request itself is the same whichever you have.
That is the clearest sign of a heat pump: the same outdoor equipment that cools in summer is doing the heating.
A thermostat offering emergency or auxiliary heat is almost always paired with a heat pump.
Heat that comes from indoor equipment alone, with the outdoor unit idle all winter, points to a furnace instead.
That is common and entirely fine. The general heating page is written for exactly that case, without assuming which system is installed.
Half the value of the visit is ruling things out. A heat pump doing something odd is not automatically a heat pump that is broken.
What it is doing, and roughly what the weather was doing at the time. For a heat pump, the second part genuinely matters.
The same equipment heats and cools, so behaviour in one mode is worth checking against the other.
If the behaviour turns out to be the system working as designed, you are told that too.
Options and pricing first, work second, with no hidden fees.
A heat pump does two jobs, so a failing one costs comfort in both seasons. That shifts the arithmetic a little.
A system that has stopped performing in heating and in cooling is saying something a single repair may not answer.
If the backup is doing the work the heat pump should be doing, the running cost of that belongs alongside the repair quote.
Something every spring and every autumn is not a run of bad luck. It is a system asking for a decision.

Joseph was the best AC tech ever. Great personality and he made sure to check all possible places that were causing my AC not to work. I was very satisfied with the results.
Great service. Friendly guy.
